How to: Upcycled Easter Baskets

Are you ready for the easiest, the cheapest, the recycledest (I think I just coined a new term), upcycled Easter baskets? Sometimes the best ideas are inspired by things you already have, or can pick up for next to nothing.

First up, I used a crusty rusty old “six-banger” muffin tin (local flea market find) and filled it with plant mix. To give the germination stage a speedy start, I soaked organic wheatgrass seeds in water for a day, left them to dry on a paper towel for a day, and then sprinkled a few seeds in each tin space. After four days of growth, I “mowed the lawn” with a pair of scissors. A few candy eggs, bunny peeps, and a bow finished the creation.

I confiscated a lonely old watering can from my potting shed, and washed it for a fresh look. Adding a wide olive polka dot grosgrain ribbon gave it just the handle it needed. This time I used spring-green Easter grass, and traditional hard-boiled dyed eggs.

Next up, I used a wire basket (“antique” store) to create a rustic theme. Tear fabric and weave the strips into the wire mesh and finish with a ragged, raw edged bow. Use excelsior as the filler for your basket. It is biodegradable and a perfect light tan color. Brown, hard-boiled eggs (not dyed) are ideal to carry out the “country” motif.

And finally, I used a metal colander (thrift shop) that I spray painted gold. The rich, metallic theme is carried out through the use of gold Easter grass, gold foil-wrapped candies, and a chocolate bunny also wrapped in gold foil. Major bling!!
