paper crafted Easter baskets

Continuing on with our obsession series of paper crafted Easter baskets, we have two great tutorials today – one basket made of woven paper and one made with paper flowers.

Worried you don’t have the stuff to take on these paper crafted Easter baskets (and by stuff I mean cajones)? Let’s just say on the Paper & Cake “1-5 scissors” scale of difficulty, one scissor being easy and 5 scissors being ridiculous, these are maybe a 2. But. On the Paper & Cake “1-5 scissors” scale of patience and dedication, you’ll need all 5 pairs.

First up – a woven paper basket!

What you’ll need:
Atlas pages or maps
Paper cutter or scissors
Double sided tape

1. Cut thirteen, 1” wide strips of your map paper- they should be around 11” long (or more)
2. Fold them in half for added strength (if your map paper is quite thick, just cut your initial strips ½” wide instead)
3. Weave 8 of your strips in an over under pattern, four vertically and four horizontally
4. Carefully crease all of the strips right at the edge of the woven center square
5. Take a strip of map paper and, holding one sides four strips vertically, begin to weave around the four walls of the basket. You can use a piece of double sided tape now and again to hold the strips in place. Use a piece of double sided tape when you reach the end of each strip.
6. Repeat the vertical wall weaving (over under, over under) until it is 3 strips tall.

7. With your side walls in place, trim the strips to about an inch above the finished walls
8. Fold the vertical strips that are on the outside, to the inside and tape them down.
9. Trim the vertical wall strips that are on the inside so they are flush with the top edge of the basket.
10. Place a strip folded over the top edge of the basket, fold as you go around all four sides and tape the ends down.
11. Use the final folded strip as a handle, just tape on the insides.
12. Fill with tiny candy and enjoy!

1. Print your pdf pages double sided with matching patterned paper. Cut spiral shapes out as circles.
2. Cut along the spiral lines to get all the way to the center.
3. Using a small skewer, round chopstick or lollipop stick, start from the outside point and tightly roll paper into itself , all the way to the center
4. Remove the skewer, and squeeze the paper spiral, squishing it in 2 directions so that it is not perfectly round
5. Let go and let the spiral unwind a bit naturally
6. Using hot glue, dab a bit onto the center bottom of the flower, and press the spiral down into the glue so that it wont unwind any more
